I am rereading Haruki Murakami’s “Men Without Women“.
What kind of environment did you grow up in when you were a child?
I grew up in an ordinary residential area in Osaka.I haven’t been able to get along well with my family since I got the feeling, and I have wanted to independent of my family as soon as possible.
Tell me about the work titled “Travel” on your website.
Although Posing with titling “Travel“, most of the photos were taken in the country where I went for work. When I go abroad, I can’t understand the language, so it’s fun to convey my feelings through the movements and facial expressions of my eyes. I would like to go on a trip again when Corona calms down.
Tell us how you photographed “Amami Oshima (one of Amami islands of Kyushu district in Japan)“ on your website.
I think the first reason was that I felt people who have a strong belief were very beautiful. I feel that “believing” is not a theory but an energy that comes out from the depths of the body, and there is not necessarily a reason to believe, but it is like to be attracted to each other by invisible things. In addition, I think that we can strongly believe and connect our hearts beyond reason.
When I was getting interested in Amami, I went to meet people from Amami.
I learned that Amami has a festival for a long time to pray for a good harvest to the gods of rice fields and fields, and to pray to the gods beyond the sea, and I was told that it is still going on. By seeing and feeling the prayers of the local people together and the feelings of praying together, I felt that I could get closer to believing. I think there are several such festivals all over Japan, but at this time I felt like I was being called by Amami, so I went there.
Do you have a place you can call spiritual home?
It is Oita prefecture. I grew up in Osaka, but I was born in Oita prefecture, where my grandparents live and I visit almost every year.
Where are you based in currently?
Tokyo.
What is the precious thing/ time in your daily life?
When listening to music or feeling the season.
What is your favorite fashion style?
I like clothes are simple and easy-to-move.
Please tell us about the favorite piece from your wardrobe?
Navy dress.

Would you tell us the name of flower and its colour which blooms in your hometown?
Where I glow up was almost no nature, but the tulips blooming in the flowerpots in my neighborhood were cute and I used to like watching them.
What is your favorite season?
Autumn and winter.
Do you remember when you took a picture for the first time?
I don’t remember the first one, but I clearly remember the first time I though I could take my photograph.
What camera and roll of film do you shoot with currently?
PENTAX67 and FUJIFILM 400H
When do you feel excitement as taking photograph?
When I could capture something like an invisible thing. Most of the time I shoot on film, so it’s very exciting to see the developed photos.
What is your favorite photo book?
“Elnias Forest” by Nao Tsuda.
What is your favorite to spend your holiday?
If the weather is nice, get out of Tokyo and breathe in the delicious air. If it’s raining, I like to play music that matches the rain and read while listening to the sound of the rain.
Tell me about the shooting of niuhans AW2020?
I saw the collection had beautiful material and shape, so I chose to have someone with a beautiful body line to wear them. Landscape was a little difficult to shoot in a short period of time because it was just an encounter.
Do you have a place where you would like to visit for shooting after the pandemic?
I would like to visit England, where a person I want to see.
Lastly, what is the plan for your future plans?
I want to live while steadily searching for light.

子供の頃はどんな環境で育ちましたか?
大阪のごく普通の住宅街で育ちました。物心がついた時から家族が苦手で、ずっと早く家を出たいと思っていました。
ウェブサイト上の「旅」というタイトルの写真について教えて下さい。
「旅」なんてカッコつけていますが、ほとんどが仕事で行った国で撮った写真です。海外に行くと言葉が通じない分、目の動きや表情で気持ちが伝わったりするのが楽しいです。コロナが落ち着いたらまた旅に出たいと思っています。
奄美大島を撮影した経緯を教えて下さい。
信じる心を強く持っている人はとても美しいと感じたのが最初のきっかけだったと思います。
「信じる」ということは理屈ではなく身体の奥から出てくるエネルギーのようなもののような 気がしていて、信じるために必ずしも理由があるのではなく、目に見えないもので惹かれ合うように、理屈を超えて強く信じ合い心を結ぶことはできると思っています。奄美が気になり出した時に奄美出身の人に会いに行って、奄美には古くから田や畑の神々への 豊作祈願、海の彼方の神々への祈願を行うお祭りがあること、それが今も続いていることを教えてもらいました。地域の人々が一緒になってみんなで祈りを捧げる。どういう思いで祈りを 捧げるのか、目で見て感じることが出来たら、信じるということに少しでも近づけるような気 がしました。そういうお祭りは日本中にもいくつかあると思うのですが、このときは奄美に呼 ばれているような気がしていたので行きました。
心の故郷的な、親しみを感じる異郷の地はありますか?
大分県です。育ったのは大阪ですが、生まれたのは大分県で祖父母の家があり ほぼ毎年訪れています。
現在の生活/制作拠点はどこですか?
東京です。
日常でどんな時に幸せを感じますか?
音楽を聴いているときや季節を感じる瞬間です。
ニュアンスではボタニカルダイの染色技術を使うことがありますが、あなたの育った町に咲く花を教えて下さい。
自然がほとんどなかったのですが、近所の植木鉢の中で咲いてたチューリップが可愛くてよく見ていました。
好きな季節はありますか?
秋と冬が好きです。
好きなファッションスタイルはありますか?
シンプルで動きやすい服装が好きです。
あなたのワードローブのお気に入りの一着を教えて下さい。
ネイビーのワンピースです。
初めて写真を撮った時のことは覚えていますか?
初めて撮った時のことは明確に覚えていないけれど、初めて自分の写真が撮れたなと思った時のことはよく覚えています。
使用しているカメラとフィルムを教えて下さい。
PENTAX67とFUJIFILM 400Hです。
写真を撮っていて面白い!と感じる瞬間はどんな時ですか?
目に見えない気配のようなものが写った時。フィルムで撮ることがほとんどなので、現像が上がった写真を見るときが楽しいです。
好きな写真集はありますか?
津田直さんの『Elnias Forest』がお気に入りです。
好きな休日の過ごし方を教えて下さい。
天気が良ければ東京から出て美味しい空気を吸いに行くこと。雨だったら雨に合う音楽をかけて雨音と一緒に聴きながら読書するのが好きです。
今回のniuhans AW2020の撮影について教えて下さい。
素材も形もとても綺麗だったので、体の線が美しい人に着てもらって撮影したいと思って、風景は出会いなので短期間での撮影は少し難しかったです。
このパンデミック騒動が終息したら撮影に訪れてみたい国はありますか?
会いたい人がいるからイギリスへ行きたいです。
これからのプランを教えて下さい。
地道に光を探しながら生きていきたいと思っています。

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MALY MANN
The work of Maly Man which all elements of LA’s light, wind, earth, and skin are transmitted with a powerful and delicate texture. Her roots, which seem to be multinational at first glance, are continents that have reached across the Pacific Ocean. She captures with a camera with a physical sense, she calls it the strange sense. Interview with Maly Mann, who shot the image of niuhans Fall / Winter 2019.

Where are you right now?
Los Angeles, CA
What the view from the window?
Downtown Los Angeles drenched in sunshine.
What book are you reading today?
I have been constantly in and out of reading ‘The Word Pretty‘ by Elisa Gabbert. Intensely beautiful essays that I find myself coming back to.
Can you tell us about your roots?
My parents were both born in Cambodia. My mother has a bit of Chinese in her blood, and my father has some Thai in him. They moved to the states in the late 70’s.
Would you tell us about the environment where you were raised in your childhood
I was raised in Long Beach, CA. Many of my parents friends from back home lived there and found work there after the corrupt government took over Cambodia. I remember spending my days running around my neighbors garden, playing ball, and making photographs with my sister Sam whom first taught me about cameras and the ability we have with them.
niuhans often dyes clothes with botanical colors. What is the name of flower and its colour blooms in your hometown?
Ah yes! I love that about the brand. The city flower is the Bird of Paradise which blooms in multiple colors: red,orange, blue. It’s quite a beautiful sight.
What is the precious thing/time in your daily life?
The early morning. The moment I turn the stove on to warm up my kettle that I’d use to brew coffee is the click of bliss. Knowing that it is a new day and fresh start with many possibilities is one of the greatest joys.
How would you spend time during a day off?
I usually find myself with a good film and popcorn after a long walk.
What is your favorite fashion style?
Simple, clean, usually a lot of black and loose pants. I always have oxfords or loafers around.
Do you remember when you took a picture for the first time?
Yes! 4th grade during a class camping trip. I begged my sister to get me a few disposables and I went wild with them!
Your photography seems depict your lifestyle. what is the difference thing between capturing by camera and eye?
I am not sure why this is a pretty tough question. I live daily capturing moments and creating mental notes about what I view but when I see something that I know I do not want to let slip from my memory, I photograph it. Some images hold much more value when they are tangible rather than memorable in a strange sense. They carry weight as they do when you initially felt the need to keep it close to you initially.
How do modeling and painting influence your photography work?
I have found painting to be much more of a release as time has moved. Painting has always been a source of mood-boarding and testing and this has led to me feeling better clear-headed when it comes to my other lines of work. Regarding modeling, I have found it to be very helpful to my photography work when it comes to shooting other subjects because I now know what works for the subjects body, how to tend to lighting, and how to be communicative with everyone involved. The importance of understanding how to work in front of the camera vs. how to work behind the camera go hand-in-hand.
What is social media to you?
A means of communication. Nothing more at this point. Social Media has some strange toxicity that we can’t escape and at this point, I use it as a portfolio in some sense because it is easier for people to connect with my handle rather than my email. So at this point, it is merely a form of messaging.
What camera and roll of film do you shoot with currently?
I shoot mainly with Kodak Portra 400 on a Pentax 67 early model.
Who is your hero in art?
My heroes are all the young kids who are trying to make it.
Who is your favorite photographer?
Corinne Day has been a big influence of mine as well as Masao Yamamoto.
Regarding niuhans shoot, where did you shoot?
I shot this lookbook in Elysian Park of Los Angeles.
Looking back the shooting, would you tell us how the shoot went?
The shoot was amazing. The day started very early around 6am and the two models were incredibly kind and worked with ease.
Tell us about the relationship between you and models at the shooting?
Brenden Dyer and Ciara Maccaro are two models to remember! Great looks with even greater hearts. Brenden is a friend of my partner’s and it was great to connect with him on this shoot and the relationship between he and Ciara (who I have known for years) was very fluid. They both worked really well.
Do you have a place where you can be most energetic or relaxed?
I find myself feeling the brightest and most calm in Yosemite Valley, CA – the scenery is breathtaking no matter the time of year. I am very much so an outdoors type of person and Yosemite is the place I come back into myself. I run along the streams, dip my head in the water, go on long walks, and take in all the air I can.
What is your impression of Japan?
Beautiful is an understatement. I love Japan and I have yet to go there.
Do you have a place where you are going to visit for shooting?
Iceland. I am looking into a long stint in Iceland in the coming year.
What is the plan for your future projects?
No plan necessarily. I just want to make work with no purpose. I just want my work to carry the weight I feel when I am making it. I want it to be full of truth. I want it to hold love.
Lastly, is there any news you would like to announce?
I wouldn’t be here in this position (photographing, modeling, creating, etc.) if it weren’t for the people I met in 2016. Thank you to those of you who inspired me to reach a potential I was afraid of going for. Love to all.

あなたのルーツについて教えて頂けますか？
両親はカンボジア出身で、70年代後半にアメリカへ移り住んできたの。母には少し中国人の血が流れていて、父にはタイ人の血が少し流れている。
子供の頃に育った環境について教えてください。
カンボジア政府の崩壊後、両親の友人たちもたくさんカリフォルニア州南部のロングビーチへ移ってきたの。 近所で庭を走り回ったり、ボール遊びをしたり、わたしに初めてカメラについて教えてくれた姉のサムとはよく写真を撮ったりしたのを思い出すわ。
niuhansでは花や草木で服を染めることがありますが、あなたの故郷に咲く花の名前や色を教えていただけますか？
niuhansのそういうところが大好きよ！この街ではストレリチア（極楽鳥花）が代表的で、赤、オレンジ、青などいろんな色で咲く景色がとっても美しいのよ。
あなたの日常生活で大切にしていることは何ですか？
早朝にコーヒーを淹れるためのケトルをストーブにかけて、火の付く音を聞くのは至福のひと時！可能性に満ちた新たな一日のはじまりの知らせのようで嬉しくなるから。
休日の過ごし方を教えてください。
いつも長い散歩の後、ポップコーンを食べながら映画を見るのが好き。
好きなファッションスタイルを教えてください。
シンプルでクリーンなスタイルが好き。黒い服を着ることが多くて、ゆったりしたパンツも好き。 靴はいつもオックスフォードシューズかローファーを履いてる。
初めて写真を撮ったときのことを覚えていますか？
ええ、小学4年生のときだったわ。学校のキャンプ旅行に行く時に妹にお願いして使い捨てカメラを手に入れて貰って、夢中で写真を撮ったのを覚えてるわ。
あなたの写真はあなた自身のライフスタイルを描写しているように思えますが、カメラで捉えるのと肉眼で捉える違いはなんだと思いますか？
なかなか難しい質問ね。日常的に目に写る様々なシーンを頭の中にメモはしているけれど、記憶に留めておきたいと感じる光景に出会った瞬間に撮影するわ。記憶よりも実体として残すものとして価値を見出す時、そういった質量は目に止まった瞬間に直感的に感じるものなの。
モデルの仕事と絵を描くことはあなたの写真作品にどのような影響を与えていますか？
時間が経つにつれて、絵を描くことは自分を解放することになると気づいたの。私にとって絵画はムードボードや実験の役目になっていて、他の仕事を行う際の道しるべにもなってるわ。モデルをすることに関しては、他の被写体を撮影する際にとても役立ってる。自らモデルを経験することで、身体の動きや照明効果、スタッフとのコミュニケーション方法がわかったから。 カメラの前と後ろの作業は密接な関係にあって、相対的な理解が大切だと思うわ。
あなたにとってソーシャルメディアとは？
コミュニケーションの手段、現時点ではこれ以上でも以下でもないわ。ソーシャルメディアには、私たちが逃れることのできない奇妙な毒性があるけれど、今のところ、Eメールより気軽だから、ある意味ポートフォリオとして使っているわ。単なる伝達手段のひとつね。
使用しているカメラとフィルムを教えてください。
Pentax 67の初期モデルでいつもフィルムはKodak Portra 400を使っているわ。
アート界のヒーローはいますか？
私のヒーローはアートに取り組む若者全てよ。
好きな写真家はだれですか？
Corinne Dayと山本昌男はわたしに大きな影響を与えた写真家たちよ。
ニュアンスの撮影について、どこで撮影しましたか？
ロサンゼルスのエリシアン公園。
撮影の様子を教えてください。
撮影は素晴らしかったわ。 その日は非常に早く始めたの、早朝6時頃からだったけど、2人のモデルも信じられないほど親切で順調に撮影できたわ。
今回撮影したモデルとの関係について教えてください。
Brenden DyerとCiara Maccaroは性格もルックスも素晴らしくて、絶対覚えていて欲しいモデルたちよ！Brendenは私のパートナーの友人で、この撮影で知り合って、Ciaraとは長年の付き合いよ。2人はお互いとても自然な雰囲気で本当にうまくいったわ。
あなたにとって心の故郷的な場所はありますか？
ええ、カリフォルニア州のYosemite Valleでは最も明るく穏やかな気分になれるわ。季節を問わず息を呑むほど美しい景色で、自分自身を見つめられる場所。小川に沿って走って、河の水に頭を浸したり、長い散歩をしてできる限りの空気を体に取り入れるの。アウトドア派のわたしにはぴったり。
日本の印象を教えてください。
美しいの一言だけでは語れないわね。まだ訪れたことがないけれど、日本は好き。
撮影で行きたい場所はありますか？
アイスランド。来年アイスランドで長めの旅行を計画中よ。
今後の計画は？
特に計画はないわ。目的のない仕事をしたいだけ、自分の仕事に、自分が作っているときに感じることを伝えたいだけなの。真実に満ちてた心のある仕事をしていたいの。
最後にお知らせはありますか？
2016年に出会った人たちに感謝の気持ちを伝えたい。彼らがいなければ、今のポジション（写真家でモデルでアーチスト）にわたしはいなかったと思うから。

Román Yñán, a photographer who works on a universal theme of everyday life and his family. The image of the niuhans Spring / Summer 2019 collection is presented as part of his “Familiar series”, showing a moment that is close to his image.

Where are you right now?
In my house-study
What the view from the window?
The view of an interior courtyard, typical of the city of Barcelona
Do you have a place you can call spiritual home? If yes, please tell us about it.
Photography are my loved ones is the most spiritual home. For me photography is a way of relating with my loved ones. It’s like that, I can’t help it. I think that I’ve reached the point where photography can’t be separated from my life, neither my life from photography. This is what my work is about, if it can be called a work.
What is the precious thing/ time in your daily life?
The possibility of spending my time in a calm and reflective way. Stop the time you could say! Photography helps in that…
How would you spend time during a day off, and also a working day?
My work is an attempt to make disappear the line that separates photography from life.
In nature things happen, there is no separation. “It’s happening”. Here and now. That’s what my journals and my work are about. It is a way of making life visible. Every moment is absolute, every moment unrepeatable. Everything shines full of possibilities if we are attentive.
What camera and roll of film do you shoot with currently?
For this niuhans shooting, i used a pentax 67 II with kodak portra film amb some hand made color special filters
What is your favorite photo book?
Any photobook by Takashi Homma is very interesting. I keep with special affection a copy of Tokyo and my Daughter, it’s a great little book!
Where did you shoot for niuhans?
The place is Maçanet de Cabrenys, a little precious village on the north of Catalonia, behind the French frontier. The river is the Muga river. It was a fantastic day of vacation in the company of my friends and my family. Real Sooting day!
If you don’t mind, tell us about the relationship between you and the model at the Spring Summer 2019 niuhans shooting?
Yes sure, it’s my son!
The idea was to introduce clothes in my work in a natural way, with in my family series*
* “Familiar Series” presents a series of photographies which Román Yñán has made about his daily life with his wife Sonia, and his chidren, Tomás and Elsa. Through the example of his own family, Román suggests a photographic research about the family in a universal sense, which is something that we all recognize and experience in one way or another.

It is one of my favorite places in the world! full of contrasts, good people and love towards photography and books! I really want to go back, soon …
Do you have a place where you would like to visit for shooting?
It would be interesting to go back to Japan, to visit and photograph the north. Hokkaido …
Lastly, is there any news you would like to announce? Or what is the plan for your future projects?
I have been working in my photographic diaries and series for a while. Preparing a small collection of photobooks. Soon!

日常と家族といった普遍的なテーマをもとに制作活動を行う写真家、Román Yñán。彼の映像に近い感覚にとらわれる瞬間が映し出されたniuhans 2019年春夏コレクションのイメージは彼の作品、“Familiar Series”の一部となって届けられました。
今どちらにいらっしゃいますか？
自宅にいるよ。
窓からどんな景色が見えまか？
目の前には、よくあるバルセルナの中庭の眺めが広がっている。
あなたにとって、心の故郷的な場所はありますか?
写真そのものが私にとってスピリチャルな場所と言えるかもしれない。写真は愛する人たちとの関わり方でもあるので、私の人生と写真は密接な関係があって、切り離すことはできないものです。ことによると、そのこと自体が私の作品と言えるのもしれません。
日々の生活の中で大切にしていることや時間はありますか？
内観的で静寂な時間を過ごせることを大切にしてます。時を止めることができるような写真を撮る時間もそうだね。
仕事の日とオフの日の過ごし方を教えてください。
写真と生活の境界線をなくすことが私の仕事のようなものだから、自然にそうなるし、オンオフの分け隔てはありません。 時折日常の中で自然に起きることが私のジャーナルや作品に反映されているからね。それは人生を可視化する方法でもあるし、すべての瞬間は絶対的なものであり、すべての瞬間は再現不可能と理解できるんだ。私たちが注意深くなれば、すべてが可能性に満ちて輝いていると気づくはずだよ。
使っているカメラとフィルムを教えてください。
今回niuhansの撮影で使用したカメラはpentax 67 II、フィルムは「kodak portra」、あとは特別に手作りしたカラーフィルターを使っているよ。
お気に入りの写真集はありますか？
ホンマタカシの写真集はどれもとても面白いと思う。特に「Tokyo and my Daughter」という小さな本が素晴らしい！
niuhansの2019年春夏コレクションの撮影はどこで行いましたか？
今回の撮影では、スペインとフランスとの国境にあるMaçanetde Cabrenysというカタルーニャ北部の小さな貴重な村で撮影をして写っている川はMugaというんだ。本当に素晴らしい撮影日和でね、同僚の友人と私の家族みんなで休暇に撮影したんだよ。
モデルとの関係を教えてください。
私の息子です！
今回、私の家族を被写体にした家族のシリーズ*の中で自然な形でniuhansの服を写すことがアイデアにありました。
*“Familiar Series” は、Román Yñanが妻のSoniaや子供のTomás、Elsaとの日常生活を取り下ろした写真のシリーズ。Romanは彼自身の家族という被写体を通して、普遍的な意味での家族という概念を捉えている。それは彼の作品から我々が何らかの方法で認識し、経験することができるものだ。（Ana Schulzによるテキスト）
日本の印象について聞かせてください。
日本は世界で最も好きな場所の一つ！美しいコントラストに溢れていて、日本人や写真、本も大好きだ。近いうちにまた訪れたいと思っているよ。
撮影で訪れてみたい場所はありますか？
日本に行けたらいいな、北海道の北部で写真を撮ってみたいなぁ。

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH VIVIEN AYROLES
“niuhans’ AW2018 collection’s photography was taken by a French photographer, Vivien Ayroles who is from Marseille, the oldest port of France built by the Greeks in the 6th century BC.
Ayroles expresses Japanese aesthetics as “too wet”.
A unique dry tone arouses something nostalgia in his work, a feeling of contemporary touch, sharpness and texture are fascinating.

Where are you right now?
I am in Marseille, working on my computer, sitting in the kitchen of my apartment.
What the view from the window?
I can see the whole South of the city buildings, football stadium, trees, towards the moutains.
Perhaps would you tell us about the environment where you were raised in your childhood/ teen years?
I was born in Burgundy in a rural town, famous for its wines. Then my parents moved to the South of France, still a wine production region. We always had a big garden, and in Provence, part of the garden was for me to plant and take care of. I began collecting succulents and cacti, they are quite big now !
niuhans often dyes clothes with botanical colors. Would you tell us the name of flower and its colour which blooms in your hometown?
During summer, it’s really dry, so almost the only flower blooming is the Oleander. Mostly pink, but also red, white, yellow… There are also a few wildflowers like the Arabian pea.
Do you have a place you can call spiritual home? If yes, please tell us about it.
There is a not really a place, I’d say many rocky, dry, with golden grass, and a lot of sun places could be a spiritual home. I love the Mediterranean region, and it’s where I feel good.
How would you spend time during a day off, and also a working day?
I drink tea every morning and almost every afternoon. In a day off or in a working day.
I can’t really say any more than that. I like hiking but I cannot do it as often as I would like to.
What is your favorite fashion style?
I don’t know, something comfy. I like short shorts and tight jeans.
Do you remember when you took a picture for the first time?
I don’t remember.
What do you try to catch when you are taking a photograph?
I try to catch something that moves me. That I can explain or not. It’s not always beautiful as someone would mean it, but there must be some beauty in it that attracted my eye and made me want to photograph it.
What camera and roll of film do you shoot with currently?
I mostly use a Mamiya 7II with 400 iso Kodak Portra film.
What is your favorite photo book?
If I have to pick one I love to go back looking at it, it would a book by Jean-Luc Moulène, Fénautrigues. It’s about a very small town, only a few houses really, where his family come from. He had been photographing it for about ten years, at any time of the year, following four paths that goes in four different directions.
Regarding niuhans shoot, where did you shoot for niuhans?
I shoot in Malmousque neighbourhood in Marseille. On the exact place I go to swim, on the rocks along the sea. It was in February, on a windy but sunny day.
Looking back the shooting, would you tell us how the shoot went?
I went well. I am not use to photograph clothes or fashion portraits. So it was challenging.
If you don’t mind, tell us about the relationship between you and models at the shooting?
My model, Iris, is a dear friend of mine. I met her a the Arles School of Photography, and now she’s living in Marseille too. She helped me a lot, trying to find poses, and interesting points of view.
What is your impression of Japan?
I have never been in Japan, I know it from literature and movies. So my impression is a beautiful country, but too wet for my liking.
Do you have a place where you would like to visit for shooting?
I would like to visit Crete and to go back to Lebanon.
Lastly, is there any news you would like to announce? Or what is the plan for your future projects?
I am very happy about my last project, a photographic conversation with photographer Valérie Jouve. It is called “Marseille, Jéricho” as she was shooting in Palestine, and I was shooting in the Northern neighbourhood of Marseille. They are both two very Mediterranean cities, and it’s about the way people live/occupy a place they would call home.
It’s been shown in Arles this summer and we will present it this Autumn in Marseille and hopefully in a lot of other cities !

紀元前6世紀にギリシア人が築いたフランス最古の町マルセイユ出身のフランス人写真家、Vivien Ayroles（ヴィヴィアン・エロール）にニュアンス 2018年秋冬コレクションのイメージ写真を撮り下ろしてもらいました。
日本の美学を”too wet”と表現する彼の作品からは、独特な乾いたトーンとどこか懐かしさを喚起させる現代的な鋭さと手触りが感じられる。

今窓から見える景色を教えてください。
マルセイユの自宅のキッチンに座ってパソコンで仕事をしてるんだけど、ここからは南の街全体が見えるんだ。サッカースタジアムとか、遠くの山の方には木が見える。
幼少期や10代の頃はどのような環境で育ちましたか?
ブルゴーニュのワインで有名な農村の町で生まれたんだ。その後、私の両親はフランス南部に移り住んで、そこもワイン生産地域だったから、いつも大きな庭を持っていたよ。プロヴァンスでは、庭の一部は僕が植物を世話することができて、多肉植物やサボテンを育てていたんだけど、今ではすっかり大きく成長してるよ！
niuhansではしばしばボタニカルダイを用いていますが、
Vivienさんの故郷に咲く花の名前や色を教えて下さい。
夏の間は本当に乾燥した土地でね、花はほとんど咲かないんだけど、唯一、キョウチクトウっていうほとんどがピンク色した花が咲いているよ。赤や白、黄色の花びらで咲くこともあるけどね…あとは、アラビアのエンドウ豆のような野生の花が咲いてるよ。
あなたにとって、心の故郷的な場所はありますか?
特別な場所はないなぁ。ただ、僕にとっては金色の草や岩がたくさんあって、乾燥した太陽の降り注ぐ場所の多くは精神的な家だと言えるかな。地中海地域が大好きでね、とても心地の良い場所だと思うよ。
仕事の日とオフの日の過ごし方を教えてください。
平日や休日を問わず毎日朝と午後にお茶を飲んで過ごしているってこと以外に語れることなんてないよ。ハイキングするのが好きなんだけど、あまり時間を作れてないな。
好きなファッション・スタイルはありますか？
わからないけど、着心地のいいもの。ショートパンツとタイトジーンズが好きだよ。
写真ではどのようなものを捉えようとしますか?
自分の心を動かす何かではあると思うけれど、説明するのは難しいね。何か自分の目を引きつけて撮りたいと魅了する美しさがあるのはわかるけど、必ずしも誰もが美しいと思うものとは限らない。
使っているカメラとフィルムを教えてください。
主にMamiya 7IIとKodak Portra（ISO 400）フィルムを使用してるよ。
お気に入りの写真集はありますか?
どうしてもお気に入りを選ぶとしたら、Jean-LucMoulèneのFénautriguesになると思う。Jean-LucMoulène自身の家族が住んでいたほんの数件の住居が立ち並ぶでとても小さな町についての写真集でね、4つの異なる方向に向かって道を辿って約10年もの間撮り下ろしたものなんだ。
niuhansの2018年秋冬のシーズンイメージはどこで撮影しましたか?
今回はマルセイユ近くのMalmousque地区で撮影したよ。まさに僕がよく泳ぎに行く海岸の岩の上でね、風が強くて晴れ渡った2月の日に撮影したよ。
撮影の感想を聞かせてください。
撮影は順調だったよ、ただ服やファッションでのポートレイト撮影には慣れていなかったから、僕にとってはある意味挑戦だったね。
モデルとの関係について教えてください。
モデルをしてくれたのは、僕の親友のアイリス。私はアルルの写真学校で彼女に会って、彼女も現在マルセイユに住んでいるんだ。彼女様々なポーズを試してくれてとても協力的でね、面白い見せ方を一緒に探ってくれたんだ。
日本の印象について聞かせてください。
日本に行ったことは一度もないけど、映画や文学の世界で知った日本の印象はとても美しい。でも僕の好みからすると、ちょっとじめじめした感じがありすぎるかな。
今後、撮影で訪れてみたい場所はありますか?
クレタ島を訪れてからレバノンに行きたいなと思うよ。
最後に今後の予定や告知など聞かせてください。
つい最近、写真家のValérie Jouveと写真的な会話のプロジェクト、“Marseille, Jéricho”を発表したことにとても満足しているよ。Valérieはパレスチナで撮影し、僕はマルセイユの北部地区で撮影したんだ。お互い地中海に面した街で、人々が暮らす生活風景を撮影した作品なんだ。今年の夏にアルルで、秋にはマルセイユで展示の開催を予定しているよ。うまくいけば他の多くの都市でも発表できたらと考えているところなんだ！

1986年、フランス・ブルゴーニュ生まれ。エクス＝アン＝プロヴァンス政治学院にて政治学を学んだ後、国立高等写真学校（アルル）にて写真を学ぶ。フランス・マルセイユを拠点に活動するフォトグラファー。2016年、フランスの写真賞『ラ・ブルス・デュ・タロン』にてファイナリストに選出。現在、Palais de Luppé（アルル）にて写真展“Marseille, Jéricho, une conversation photographique”を開催中。

Where are you right now?

What the view from the window?
My neighbor’s windows, some pigeons & red flowers.
What a colour would you choose for your mood today?
Green.
Perhaps would you tell us about the environment where you were raised in your childhood/ teen years?
I was raised for the most part of my childhood in northern Sweden. It’s a little quite village surrounded by mountains, woods and a streaming river.
Where do you live now?
Currently in Paris, but heading back to Sweden in a few weeks.
niuhans often dyes clothes with botanical colors. Would you tell us the name of flower and its colour which blooms in your hometown?
Our state flower is Flax, which is also a great bio material for clothes. My mother has a clothing company, Maria Lindberg Design, she almost mainly use linen material in her clothes.
What is your favorite season?
I love all seasons for different reasons, but if I have to pick one, it’d be fall. I love when the leaves fall from the trees and create little pales on the ground, it smells good and you can cozy up inside drinking tea by the fireplace.
Do you have a place you can call spiritual home? If yes, please tell us about it.
Being in the forest always makes me feel really calm, and it’s one of the places where I like to shoot the most.
What is the precious thing/ time in your daily life?
Taking my dog out on hikes makes me happy, because it makes my dog happy.
How would you spend time during a day off, and also a working day?
On a day off I try to not do too much, I watch series or read, go for a walk or see my friends. When working, it’s hard to say because my job is so versatile, either I go out and shoot in the nature, work on a video production or shoot fashion at different locations.
What is your favorite fashion style?
Jeans and t-shirt, sneakers.
Please tell us about the favorite piece from your wardrobe?
At the moment.. Nothing. I really need to buy new clothes.
What made you interested in talking a photograph?
I like that you can create a mood and capture moments that you can later look back on.
What do you try to catch when you are taking a photograph?
A movement, a certain mood, the beauty that hides in the ordinary and decay.
What camera do you shoot with currently?
I use a digital SLR with different prime lenses mostly at the moment. Sometimes I shoot with an Olympus mjuII for quick street snapshots.
Do you have a favorite photo/art book?
I really like Grays the Mountain Sends by Bryan Schutmaat. Also any book by William Eggleston or Helen Levitt.
Which photographers/artists do you like?
I recently discovered the work of an artist called Petros Koublis, he takes stunning landscape photos and portraits of animals.
Regarding niuhans shoot, where did you shoot?
I shoot outside of my hometown, Järvsö in Sweden. We went to a place called Harsa which is great for skiing and we shoot on the middle of the lake on the ice.
Looking back the shooting, would you tell us how the shoot went?
It went great. It was my first time shooting Rebecka, we were mostly playing around with the snow and the scenery.
If you don’t mind, tell us about the relationship between you and model at the shooting?
Actually it was my mother who met Rebecka first, at an auction. She told her about my work and asked if she’d be up for shooting sometimes, so I called her up after talking to Daisuke and she was down.
What is your impression of Japan?
I’ve never been but Japan makes me think of Lost in Translation, sushi and manga girls.
Do you have a place where you would like to visit for shooting?
There are so many places I’d like to go, Japan being one. I’d also like to go to Russia and eastern Europe, Africa, Canada and mid America.
Lastly, is there any news you would like to announce? Or what is the plan for your future projects?
Currently I’m trying to put together my first photo book so I’m looking into options for doing that maybe this fall. Besides that I’m working on a project about northern Sweden that I will also complete this fall.

私のホームタウンには亜麻の花が咲いてるわ。リンネルの原料になる植物よ。私の母はMaria Lindberg Designという衣類品会社を営んでいて、ほとんどの生地は麻を使っているのよ。
好きな季節は?
異なる理由でどの季節も好きだけれど、ひとつだけ上げるとしたら、秋ね。枯れ葉が落ちる様子とか、地面が淡い色になる感じが好き。秋の匂いや家で暖炉の近くで寛いでお茶を飲んだりできるから。
あなたにとって、心の故郷的な場所はありますか?
森へ行くと心がいつも落ち着くわ。わたしが唯一いつも撮影している場所が森なの。
日々の生活の中で大切にしていることや時間はありますか?
飼っている犬とハイキングに行くのが好き、犬が楽しそうにしているとわたしもハッピーな気分になれるから。
仕事の日とオフの日の過ごし方を教えてください。
休みの日には何もしないことが多いわ。連ドラを観たり、読書したり、散歩したり、友人にあ ったりするけれど、仕事のときは、色々やっているから説明するのが難しいけれど、自然の中で撮影したり、映像を制作したり、様々な場所でファッション・フォトを撮影したりしているわ。
好きなファッション・スタイルを教えてください。
ジーンズとTシャツにスニーカーの格好が好きよ。
あなたのワードローブからお気に入りの一着を教えてください。
今は無いから新しい服を買わなくちゃね。
写真のどのようなところに魅力を感じますか?
ムードをつくって、瞬間を捉えることができて、後々見返せるところに惹かれるわ。
写真ではどのようなものを捉えようとしますか?
瞬間とある一定のムード、平凡や衰えたものの中に隠された美を捉えることだと思うわ。
使っているカメラを教えてください。
今のところ、デジタルの一眼レフに異なるレンズを付け替えて使っているわ。ストリート・ス ナップでは、Olympusのmjullを使用することもあるけれど。
お気に入りの写真集はありますか?
Bryan Schutmaatの「Grays the Mountain Sends」という写真集が大好き。それに、William EgglestonやHelen Levittの写真集はどれも好きよ。
好きな写真家はいますか?
最近知ったのだけれど、素晴らしい風景写真や動物の写真を撮っているPetros Koublisという写真家が好きよ。
niuhansの2017年秋冬コレクションの撮影はどこで行いましたか?
地元から少し離れたイェルブーシェという町で撮影したわ。Harsaというスキーが有名なところでね、私たち、凍った湖の真ん中で撮影したのよ。
撮影時のエピソードなどを教えてください。
とてもうまく行ったわ。Rebeckaと仕事をしたのは初めてだったけれど、私たち、ほとんど雪遊びをしながら撮影していたの。
モデルとの関係を教えてください。
今回モデルをしてもらったRebeckaに最初に会ったのは、わたしの母だったの。母がわたしの作品のことを彼女に話してくれて、いつかモデルをしてみないかって誘っていたの。それで、niuhansの撮影の話があった時に、彼女へモデルの依頼したのよ。
日本の印象について聞かせてください。
日本へ訪れたことはないけれど、映画「ロスト・イン・トランスレーション」の印象が強いわ。それに、寿司や少女漫画のイメージもね。
撮影で訪れてみたい場所はありますか?
たくさんあるけれど、日本はその一つで、ロシアや東ヨーロッパ、アフリカ、カナダやアメリカ中部にも行って見たいわ。
最後に今後の予定や告知があれば教えてください。
初の写真集を出版しようと思っているところなの。それとは別にスウェーデン北部についての写真を制作しているところで、どちらも秋ごろに完成する予定よ。

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH MEG PORTEOUS
Where are you right now?
Tortola, Road Town in the British Virgin Islands sailing with my boyfriend on my little brothers boat.
What time is it now?
4.40pm
What the view from the window?
No window from where I am sitting but a big open balcony overlooking the harbour. I can see a fleet of catamarans tied to the dock, a large cruise ship and further out I can see my brothers boat – Daydreamer bobbing about in the waves.
What a colour would you choose for your mood today?
Green like the colour of the tablecloth & napkins at the pub I am sitting at.
Perhaps would you tell us about the environment where you were raised in your childhood/teen years?
I was raised in Taranaki, on the west coast of the north island in New Zealand. As kids we would walk up to huts on Mount Taranaki and stay the night, in winter we would ski. When it was warmer we would swim in rivers and go to the beach where the sand is black. The west coast landscape is rugged and beautiful.
Where do you live now?
On the opposite coast in Mount Maunganui.
Niuhans often dyes clothes with botanical colors. Would you tell us the name of flower and its colour which blooms in your hometown?
Not a flower but mum has cabbage trees in her garden that I love.
What is your favorite season?
Summer.
Do you have a place you can call spiritual home? If yes, please tell us about it.
Cape Reinga, the very top of New Zealand where the sea meets.
What is the precious thing/ time in your daily life?
Slow breakfasts and listening to the radio!
How would you spend time during a day off, and also a working day?
Spending time with friends and family, going for a drive with my boyfriend and making lunch / coffee on his cooker outside. During the week I like to wake up early and go for a big walk, at work I like to chat with customers and eat lunch outside in the sun.
What is your favorite fashion style?
I own a lot of white clothes! I often screenshot old images of Ali MacGraw, she has good style I also like Jackie O.
Please tell us about the favorite piece from your wardrobe?
Mum recently gave me a silk navy pantsuit she wore in the 80’s by a New Zealand designer Marilyn Sainty. I wear the trousers with old t-shirts. I like thinking about the history of old garments.
Do you remember when you took a picture for the first time?
My Mum always had her camera on her and no situation was too trivial for a photograph. One day my brothers and I took her camera and did a shoot in our garden, we took about a hundred photos but there was no film in the camera!
What made you interested in talking a photograph?
Taking a photograph makes me more sensitive to my surroundings and look at things I otherwise would have missed.
What do you try to catch when you are taking a photograph?
I am attracted to subjects with interesting colours and shapes.
What camera and roll of film do you shoot with currently?
Contax G1, Portra 400.
Do you have a favorite photo book?
Yes, I picked up a Nobuyoshi Araki book from Sydney art book fair a year ago. The book documents the passing of the artists wife, the images are full of sadness by the end of the book I am very emotional!
Which photographers do you like?
I love Japanese photography. I really like Talia Chetrit’s work also New Zealand photographer Peter Peryer.
Regarding Niuhans shoot for Spring&Summer 2017, where did you shoot for Niuhans?
In a big Industrial area in Mount Maunganui.
Looking back the shooting, would you tell us how the shoot went?
I photographed on an overcast Sunday in July. As it was a Sunday all the businesses were closed, Alice and I drove around until we found some big garage doors with nice colours; cream, yellow, blue and pink. The sun was going down so we had to be quick!
If you don’t mind, tell us about the relationship between you and model at the shooting?
Alice is the cousin of one of my best friends. We are new friends and I like her a lot. She is very straight up and cooks good food.
What is your impression of Japan?
I was lucky enough to spend two months living in rural Japan last year which was really special, I met a lot of wonderful people doing cool things there. I love the liveliness of the cities, the art and the food is amazing.
Do you have a place where you would like to visit for shooting?
Africa, Barbados and LA.
Lastly, is there any news you would like to announce? Or what is the plan for your future projects?
I am currently working on a photobook from a body of work I made while I was living in Japan and an exhibition later in 2017. I would like to do more fashion photography and purchase a medium format camera!

窓はないけれど、大きなオープンテラスからは港が見えて、いかだ舟の脚が波止場に結ばれていて、大きなクルーズ船や、遠くの方に見える弟の船は、波に揺れて夢を見ているように見えるわ。

私が今いるパブのテーブルクロスとナプキンの色みたいなグリーンね。
幼少期や10代の頃はどのような環境で育ちましたか？
ニュージーランドの北部に位置する西海岸のタラナキで育ったの。子供の頃はよくタラナキ山に登って、山小屋に泊まったり、冬はスキーをして、暖かくなると、川で泳いだり、黒土の海岸で遊んだのを思い出すわ。西海岸の景色はゴツゴツしていて、美しいのよ。
今はどこに住んでいますか？
マウント・マウンガヌイの反対側の海岸に住んでいるわ。

花ではないけれど、私の母は庭でキャベツの木を育てていて、それがとても好きだわ。

日々の生活の中で大切にしていることや時間はありますか？
時間をかけて食べる朝食と、ラジオを聴くこと！
仕事の日とオフの日の過ごし方を教えてください。
休みの日は、友人や家族と過ごしたり、ボーイフレンドと一緒にドライブしたり、彼の野外用調理器具で昼食やコーヒーを作ったりするわ。平日は早起きして、長い散歩へ出かけたり、職場ではお客さんと話したり、ランチは屋外で食べるのが好きよ。
好きなファッションスタイルを教えてください。
白い服をたくさん持ってるわ！アリ・マッグローの古い写真をネットから集めたりしたり、ジャクリーン・オナシスのスタイルも好きよ。
あなたのワードローブからお気に入りの一着を教えてください。
Marilyn Saintyというニュージーランドのデザイナーが作った80年代のネイビーのシルクパンツスーツを、若い頃の母が着ていて、それを最近、譲り受けたの。普段はパンツスタイルに古いTシャツをコーディネートするのが好き。古着は歴史を感じられるから好きですね。
初めて写真を撮った時のことを聞かせてください。
私の母は常にカメラを持ち歩いていて、どんな些細なものも写真におさめていたけれど。ある日、母と弟と私が庭で写真を撮ったことがあって、夢中になって100回くらいシャッターを切ったんだけど、結局フィルムが入っていなかったことがあったのを覚えてるわ！
写真のどのようなところに魅力を感じますか？
自分の環境や、目に写るものに対して、より敏感になれるところかな。
被写体としてどんなものに惹かれますか？
目を惹く色や形です。

ええ、シドニーのブックフェアで購入した荒木経惟が彼の亡くなった奥さんを撮った、ドキュメンタリーの写真集で、見終えると、とても悲しい気持ちに溢れるの。
好きな写真家はいますか？
日本の写真が好きだけど、写真家だとタリア・チェトリットやニュージーランド出身のピーター・ペライヤーも好きよ。
niuhansの2017年春夏コレクションの撮影はどこで行いましたか？
マウント・マウンガヌイの大きな工業地帯で撮影しました。
撮影時のエピソードなどを教えてください。
７月の曇った日曜日に撮影しました。工場は全て閉まっていて、アリスと私は、ガレージのクリームやイエロー、ブルーやピンク色の大きなドアを見つけるまで、車で徘徊していたのだけど、そうこうしているうちに陽が暮れそうになったから、急いで撮影しなくちゃいけなくなったの！
モデルとの関係を教えてください。
アリスは私の親友のいとこで、最近知り合った友達なの。彼女はとても真っ直ぐな人で、料理も上手で、大好きよ。
日本の印象について聞かせてください。
昨年２ヶ月間だけ、日本の田園に住めたことがあって、とても貴重な体験をして、ラッキーだったわ。ローカルの人々との素敵な出会いがたくさんあったし、日本の街やアート、食文化も素晴らしかったわ！
撮影で訪れてみたい場所はありますか？
アフリカ、バルバトス、それと、LAに行ってみたいわ。
最後に今後の予定や告知があれば教えてください。
現在、日本滞在中に撮りおろした写真集を作っていて、今年中に展示する予定なの。あとは、中判カメラを買って、ファッションフォトをもっと撮りたいと思っているところよ！

1991年、ニュージーランド、クライストチャーチ生まれ、タラナキ育ち。ニュージーランドを拠点に活動するフォトグラファー。2013年、カンタベリー大学美術学部イーラム校を卒業後、カナダのノバスコシアアートデザインにて学ぶ。また2016年にシロオニスタジオにてシロオニ・アート・レジデンシーとして群馬県藤岡市鬼石町に2ヶ月間滞在。2016年にParlour Projectsにて個展“Apparatus”を開催。

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW WITH ARIANNA LAGO
Where are you right now?
I am currently at my desk, in my house in London.
What time is it now?
It’s 2:59 P.M.
What the view from the window?
I can see my backyard, some purple wild flowers and the washing line with pink summer dresses. The sky is grey unfortunately.
What a colour would you choose about your mood of today?
Lilac like the flowers in my garden.
Where do you live now?
I live in London, in Dalston.
How did you start in photography?
I started photography after stealing my dad’s film camera in my late 20s and then I started taking pictures of the snow.
Do you remember when you took a picture for the first time?
Yes, I borrowed my friend’s dad’s camera for a week. I was about 15 years old. I was reading Balzac and a streak of light hit my hand. I photographed my hand because I didn’t want to forget that moment and the beautiful autumnal light. When I took that photo i knew I wanted to be a photographer, but I waited many years to actually decide to pursue it.
What do you try to catch when you are taking a photograph?
I decide to photograph something that pleases my eyes but that somehow contains elements of unordinary or strange.
What camera and roll of film do you shoot with currently?
Nikon F100 and PORTRA 400.
Perhaps would you tell us about the environment where you were raised in your childhood/ teen years?
I grew up in Bassano del Grappa in the north of Italy. We used to spend a lot of time in the swimming pool in the summer, skiing in the mountains in winter, mushroom picking in the woods in autumn. As a child I felt a little bit like a goonies as I was always on my bike exploring places with my brother.
Tell us the name of a flower which blooms in your hometown, and its colour.
We have a flower that blossoms in the mountains. It’s a protected specie, it’s white and it’s called Alpine Star.
Do you have a place you can call spiritual home?
Yes, when I go to Italy I always go visit a temple designed by the architect and sculptor Antonio Canova. The temple is in a town called Possagno. I love it there. It’s so peaceful.
What is your favorite season?
Spring. It’s optimistic. Every spring I feel as if I was in love.
What is the precious thing/ time in your daily life?
When I am on my bike. It’s a good time to think and feel alive.
How would you spend time during a day off, and also a working day?
On my day off, I mostly try to hang out with friends, I watch movies and cook nice food. I love cooking. I like to go to records shops and read.
When I work, if I am not shooting I spend a lot of time at the computer e mailing and looking for inspiration.
I take regular breaks and I tend to go for walks and listen to music. At the end of the day I find it very relaxing to go to the groceries and cook a nice meal. Oh, and I exercise in the park as well.
What is your favorite fashion style?
I like casual comfortable clothes, natural materials and designs that have nostalgic touch and soft shapes with nice movement.
Tell us about the favorite piece from your wardrobe?
It’s a dress made by a girl who I met on instagram. Paola Breslauers. She lives in Barcelona and one summer when it was extremely hot she wanted to wear her mum’s summer dress so badly. She couldn’t get it sent to her in time, so she decided to make one by herself using some fabric that she found in a local market. I love the simplicity of it and the story behind it is just amazing.
Do you have a favorite photo/art book?
There is a photographer I discovered recently: Mashisa Fukase. His book, “Solitude of the ravens” is one of the most expensive books I have ever heard of. I do not own it but I wish I did.
Which photographers/artists do you particularly respect?
I like a lot of Japanese photographers. But I love the approach of a Dutch photographer called Elspeth Diederix.
Where did you shoot for niuhans AW16-17?
I shot in Mount Grappa.
Please tell us about behind the shoot?
We shot over 2 days with 2 different models. One day with Ervina and One with Ele.
With Ervina we drove up to Mount Grappa with another friend. It was a very misty day down in the plains but above the clouds in the mountain the sky was so clear and cloudless. we just basically hang out and had a nice meal and took photos.
then when we started descending we could see how beautiful the scenario was: the sky was purple and the town was covered by this thick blanket of mist of mist that looked like an ocean.
With Ele, we just went for a nice walk and we tried a few different things. I love her hair it was reverberating the colours of autumn
Please tell us about the relationship between you and the model?
One of the models is Eleonora, she is my best friend. She is the sister I have never had and my strongest connections in my home town after my mum. She is a beautiful soul and a golden heart.
The other model is Ervina, who is also a friend but we have met only recently. She has an extraordinary personality and very unique ways about her. Her eyes are deep like those of a Bambi. She should be an actress.
What is your impression of Japan?
A place that I would love to visit as soon as possible. I love your culture and aesthetics. A lot of the photographers I love are from Japan. I also love your food and designers.
Do you have a place where you would like to visit for shooting?
Yes a part from Japan, Ethiopia and Mozambique.
Lastly, is there any news you would like to announce? Or what is the plan for your future projects?
Well at the moment, I am working on a few editorial projects. I love collaborating with people, but I am also looking forward to organize my next trip and take some pure observational photography.

写真を始めたきっかけについて教えて下さい。
20代の終り頃、父のカメラをくすねて、雪の写真を撮ったのが始まりなの。
初めて写真を撮った時のことを覚えていますか？
ええ、覚えてるわ。ちょうど私がBalzac（19世紀のフランス人小説家）の文学に夢中になっていた15歳くらいの時のこと。友人のお父さんから1週間だけカメラを借りたことがあって、それで、ある日、一筋の光が私の手に射し込んだの。その時、その美しい秋の光とその瞬間を絶対に忘れたくなかったから、直に写真に収めたんです。その写真を撮った時、私は写真家になりたいんだって気づいたの。でも、実際に写真家になると決意するまでは、それから何年も掛かったけれど。
写真を撮る際、どのようなものを捉えようとしていますか？
目に映った何か素敵なものを撮っているわ。そうね、一風変わったというか、不思議な感じのするものに魅力を感じて撮っているみたい。
使用しているカメラやフィルムを教えていただけますか？
Nikon F100とPOTRA 400。
子供の頃、どんな環境で育ったか教えていただけますか？
北イタリアのバッサーノ・デル・グラッパという町で育ったわ。夏は殆どプールで泳いで過ごして、冬は山でスキーを楽しんで、秋は森でキノコ狩りをするの。いつも兄と自転車で走り回っていたから、子供ながら、まるで「グーニーズ（1985年製作のアメリカ映画）」みたいだなぁって思っていたわ。
あなたの生まれ育った土地に咲く花の名前と色を教えていただけますか？
国の指定保護種になってる白い高山植物で、Alpine Starという花です。
あなたにとって、心の故郷的な場所はありますか？
ええ、イタリアへ行く際は必ず訪れている場所があるわ。Antonio Canovaの建てた神殿。ポッサーニョという町にあって、とても心が安らぐ場所なの。
好きな季節はいつですか？
春かな。楽天的になれて、恋をしている時のような気分になれるから。
私生活で大切にしている事や時間はありますか？
自転車に乗ること。考え事をするのにも適しているし、自転車で走ってると、元気になるから。
普段の生活と休日の過ごし方を教えて下さい。
休日は友人と出かけることが多いわ。映画を観たり、料理好きだから、美味しいごはんを作ったり、レコードショップに行ったり、読書するのも好き。
平日は、撮影のない日は、長時間パソコンに向かって、メールしたり、リサーチをしているわ。散歩したり、音楽を聴いて、定期的に息抜きもしているけれど。夜は、お店に食材を買いに出かけて、それで美味しい夕飯を作ることでリラックスできるの。あと、公園で運動したりもするわ。
好きなファッションスタイルはありますか？
カジュアルで着心地が良い服が好き。ナチュラルな素材で作られたものや、ソフトな形で動きのある、ちょっとノスタルジックな雰囲気の服が好きだったりするの。
あなたのワードローブからお気に入りの1着を教えて下さい。
インスタグラムで知り合ったPaola Breslauersという女の子が作ったドレスなんだけど、バルセロナに住んでいる子で、ある猛暑の夏の日に、彼女のお母さんの着ていたサマードレスがどうしても着たくなったんですって、でも直には届かなかったから、近くの生地屋で布を調達して、自分で仕立てちゃったんですって。シンプルなデザインと、その背景のストーリーが凄く良いと思うの。
お気に入りのアートブックや写真集はありますか？
深瀬昌久の「鴉」という写真集を最近見つけたんだけど、今まで見た中で一番高い値が付けられていて、いつか手に入ったらいいなぁと思っている写真集なの。
尊敬しているアーチストや写真家はいますか？
好きな日本人の写真家は多いけれど、Elspeth Diederixというオランダ人の写真家の手法を敬愛しているの。
niuhansの2016年秋冬の撮影はどこで行いましたか？
グラッパ山よ。
撮影中のエピソードなどを教えて下さい。
ErvinaとEleという2人のモデルと、それぞれ別の日に2日間に渡って撮影しました。
Ervinaとの撮影では、もう一人私の友人とでグラッパ山をドライブしたの。平野の方は霧がかかっていたけれど、雲の上は澄んだ空が晴れ渡っていて、始めはただそこに行って、皆でごはんを食べて、写真を撮っただけという感じだったのだけど、その後下山をしている時、紫色の空が広がってきて、霧の毛布で覆われた町が海のように見えるという、なんとも美しい光景にで出会えたの。
Eleとは、散歩をしながら、いくつかのパターンを試して撮影しました。彼女の髪が秋の色を反射していて、とても素敵でした。
モデルとの関係について教えて下さい。
Eleonoraとは元々、姉妹のように仲の良い親友同士で、地元では母の次に親しい人なの。彼女は美しい心を持ったとても優しい人なのよ。
Ervinaは最近知り合ったばかりの友人で、バンビのような神秘的な瞳をしたとても個性的な性格の持ち主、彼女は女優になるべきだと思う。
日本の印象について教えていただけますか？
日本は訪れてみたい場所の一つ、日本の文化や美意識も大好きだし、好きな写真家の多くは日本人だし、日本の食文化やデザイナーたちも大好きなの。
撮影で訪れてみたい場所はありますか？
日本以外なら、エチオピアとモザンビークに行ってみたいな。
最後に、今後の計画やニュースなどがあれば教えて下さい。
今のところはいくつか雑誌の撮影をしているわ。他の人とコラボレーションするのも好きだけど、純粋な視点を持った作品制作のために、旅を計画しようと思っているところなの。

Where are you right now?
My studio, which is in Toronto.

It looks into my wife’s consignment store, V S P.
What colour would you choose about your mood of today?
Sky Blue
Perhaps would you tell us about the environment where you were raised in your childhood / teen years?
I was raised in Vancouver. I spent a lot of time skateboarding around the city and snowboarding Mt. Seymour and Whistler. I feel very fortunate to grow up where I did!
Tell us the name of a flower which blooms in your hometown, and its colour.
Bidens. yellow.
What is your favorite season?
Fall.
What is the precious thing/ time in your daily life?
Walking with my dog.
How would you spend time during a day off, and also a working day?
On my days off, I like waking up early to watch Arsenal, eat lunch with my girl, walk my dog somewhere new, nap, skateboard if its nice out, eat a good dinner and go out for drinks or stay in and watch a movie.
Working days vary but I’m usually in my studio on a computer, overseeing the online shop for my wife’s store, meeting with clients, researching, taking photos, eating lunch somewhere close to home, getting in some sort of exercise like a bike ride, walking my dog around the neighbourhood, making dinner at home and then working into the evening.
What is your favourite fashion style?
Comfortable, easy to wear clothing.
Tell us about the favorite piece from your wardrobe?
It’s an Our Legacy Shawl Zip linen shirt.
What was it that made you interested in talking a photograph?
The accessibility of a camera and how photography instantly enhanced my life.
Do you remember when you took a picture for the first time?
I remember taking 10 rolls of black and white film in Barcelona in 2002. I know I shot random photos before then on disposable cameras but nothing I have a record of or clearly remember.
What do you try to catch when you are taking a photograph?
If I’m shooting a portrait I like to have them be as comfortable and natural as possible and capture their personality. My landscape and still life pictures represent time (which is pretty broad) but I’m usually attracted to places and objects in a transitional state.
Would you please tell us about your book, “Earth People”?
“Earth People” came together by sequencing photographs from 2010-13. The subject matter varies from commissioned portraits to screen grabs of video streams. It was published by Working Title.
What camera and roll of film do you shoot with currently?
Nikon F4 / 50 mm lens. Fuji Superia 400 ISO.

Where did you shoot for niuhans?
I shot Britt around our neighbourhood in Toronto and Cian around his apartment in New York.
When you look back the shooting, would you tell us how the shoot went?
I hadn’t shot much portraiture at the time so it was a great learning experience!
If you don’t mind, tell us about the relationship between you and models, Cian and Britt?
Britt at the time was my girlfriend who’s now my wife and Cian is a close friend from Vancouver that I met skateboarding 10+ years ago.
What is your impression of Japan?
Intriguing!
Do you have a place where you would like to visit for shooting?
Japan!
Lastly, is there any news you would like to announce? Or what is the plan for your future projects?
I recently completed a series of architectural photographs that focuses on social transition in London, England. I’ve also been working on a series of abstracts in my studio with a digital camera (something new for me) and have been shooting lot’s of Canadian landscapes over the past couple of years.

好きな季節はいつですか？

愛犬と散歩することです。
普段の生活と休日の過ごし方を教えて下さい。
休日は早起きしてアーセナル（英国のプロサッカーチーム）の試合を見るのが好きで、妻とランチを食べて、新しい場所を犬と散歩して、昼寝するか、天気が良ければ、スケボーをします。夜は美味しいものを食べて、飲みに出かけるか、家で映画を観ています。
平日は色々だけど、大抵は自宅でコンピューターに向かって妻のオンラインショップの運営を手伝っているけれど、クライアントと打ち合わせの時もあるし、リサーチや撮影をしていることもあります。ランチは近所で済ませて、自転車で運動したり、犬を散歩に連れて行ったり、夕飯を自炊してから夜中まで作業します。
好きなファッションスタイルはありますか？
着易くて、着心地の良い服が好きです。

写真に興味を持ったきっかけについて教えて下さい。
カメラの始めやすさと、写真が私の人生を直に充実させてくれたことです。
初めて写真を撮った時のことを覚えていますか？
2002年にモノクロフィルムで10本撮影したことを覚えています。それよりもっと前に使い捨てカメラであちこち撮った事もあるけれど、何を撮ったかあまり覚えていません。
写真を撮る際に心掛けていることを教えて下さい。
ポートレイトを撮る時は、人の内面をとらえられるよう、なるべく撮られる側の人が居心地良く、自然体でいられるように努めています。風景や静物の場合は、風景や物の移り変わる様に魅力を感じるので、(ちょっと漠然としていますが)時を表現するようにしています。
Earth Peopleというあなたの本について教えて下さい。
Earth PeopleはWorking Titleから出版された2010年から2013年の写真を順に追った写真集で、依頼を受けて撮ったポートレイトから動画のものまであります。
使用しているカメラやフィルムを教えていただけますか？
カメラはNikon F4/50 mm、フィルムはFuji Superia 400 ISOを使っています。
お気に入りのアートブックや写真集はありますか？
Wolfgang Tillmansの「Truth Study Center」です。

Brittは当時、私のガールフレンドでしたが、現在は私の妻です。Cianは親友のひとりで、バンクーバーで10年以上前にスケボーをしていた時に知り合いました。
日本の印象について教えていただけますか？
魅力的！
撮影で訪れてみたい場所はありますか？
日本です！
最後に、今後の計画やニュースなどがあれば教えて下さい。
ちょうど、イギリス、ロンドンの社会の移り変わりをテーマに建築物を撮影したシリーズを完成させたところです。新たな試みとして、抽象的なイメージをデジタルカメラで作ったシリーズもあって、他には、ここ数年間カナダの景色をたくさん撮り続けています。
