What’s the view from the window?
I can see my small garden. It is so nice weather today that I put my foliage plants into the garden. Normally they are inside the house.
What a colour would you choose for your mood of today?
Pure white.
Perhaps would you tell us about the environment where you were raised?
From when I was seven till nineteen years old, I grew up in the countryside, a suburb of Kyoto which was surrounded by the mountains. There were many beautiful ponds and rivers near our house, and it was my routine to go for fishing.
Tell us the name of a flower which blooms in your hometown, and its colour.
Magnolias are so beautiful with their white coloured flowers on the treetops. They come out just before cherry blossoms and they herald the coming of spring with white covered mountain surfaces.
Where do you live now?
I live in Tokyo now.
What is your favorite season?
I like spring the most.
Do you have a place you can call spiritual home?
It is further on the animal trail in the wood close to where I was born and raised in, there is a special space that makes me feel like everything is forgiven.
What is the precious thing/ time in your daily life?
A time having a cup of coffee in the morning, chatting with my family or friends, listening to music relaxing on my own, reading a book before going to sleep, and the moment between getting into my futon and falling asleep.
How would you spend time during a day off, and also a working day?
During weekday, I have a desk job using a personal computer in the daytime, and after work, I do for my work such as developing, printing or editing. Sometimes in the middle of night, I suddenly think to go for photographing on the instant.
In the weekend, I do shootings I was asked, otherwise I spend most of my time on my work. Also I love music, I frequently go to clubs or gigs with my friends in the night.
What is your favorite fashion style?
I’m not particular about clothes, but I prefer simple ones. Today, I am wearing a pair of light coloured jeans with a white shirt and black sneakers and beige cap on.
Tell us about the favorite piece from your wardrobe?
The pair of slacks I got recently from a secondhand clothes shop. They are so comfortable with the good widths.
Do you remember when you took a picture for the first time?
Yes, I was about eight. I used to take my father’s film camera out to photograph. I remember it very well and I still keep those pictures.
What do you try to catch when you are taking a photograph?
To tell lies as much as possible in beautiful ways.
What kind of camera and film do you shoot with currently?
I use Canon 5D Mark2 and Contax T3. Kodak Gold200 for films.
Do you have a favorite photo/art book?
Lots, but if I choose three: “Holy Bible”by Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin; “TRASH HUMPERS” by Harmony Korine;“Plans for Other Days” by Janfamily.
Which photographers/artists do you particularly respect?
So many. Constantin Schlachter, David Fathi, Todd Hido and Tommy Nease are photographers I respect. And also I respect the filmmaker, Gus Van Sant. All of his words from interviews and makings-ofs are being the bible to me.
What a film/ book/ music/ person/ thing inspires you now?
The book called “Pandora’s Camera” written by Joan Fontcuberta, I recently read was very inspiring, and I was impressed by Matmos’ music and their music video which have released this year.
Where did you shoot for niuhans?
I shot in the familiar forest near by my parent’s house in Goma of Nantan, Kyoto prefecture.
Please talk about some episodes from the shooting?
Afterwards, I surprised at the news that a bear was appearing in the same mountain we were on the same day. We never thought we have been shooting at the risk of our lives.
Please tell us about the relationship between you and the models?
Charlie is a friend of mine, and Ayaka is my girlfriend.
Do you have a place where you would like to visit for shooting?
I have lived in my great-aunt’s house in Vancouver, Canada when I was little. It has been over twenty years. I would love to go there again and taking pictures while searching a few wispy memories.

My work is in the latest issue (number 9) of Der Greif Magazine, a German magazine for contemporary photography. Please take a look.

小さな庭が見えます。今日は天気がいいのでいつも家の中にいる観葉植物を庭に出してあげました。
今日の気分を色に例えるとしたら何色ですか？
真っ白です。
子供の頃はどんな環境で育ちましたか？
７歳から１９歳まで京都市郊外の、見渡す限り山に囲まれた田舎で育ちました。家の近くには綺麗な池や川がいくつもあり、子供の頃の私の日課は主に釣りに行くことでした。
あなたの生まれ育った土地に咲く花の名前や色を教えていただけますか？
コブシが梢いっぱいに咲かせる白い花はとても綺麗です。桜よりも少し前に咲き山肌を真っ白にして、春の訪れを知らせてくれます。
現在はどちらに住んでいますか？
現在は東京都内に住んでいます。
好きな季節はいつですか？
春が一番好きです。
あなたにとって、心の故郷的な場所はありますか？
生まれ育った実家の近くの森の獣道の先に、すべてが許されたような気分になれる特別な空間があります。
私生活で大切にしている事や時間はありますか？
朝一杯のコーヒーを飲む時間、友人や家族と会話をする時間、一人でゆっくり音楽に浸る時間、
寝る前に少しだけ本を読む時間、そして布団に入ってから夢に入り込むまでの間の時間です。
普段の生活と休日の過ごし方を教えて下さい。
平日は朝から夜までパソコンを使ったデスクワークをしています。仕事の後は、作品の現像やプリント、編集作業をしていることが多いです。また、深夜に急に思い立って、写真を撮りに行く日もあります。

休日は依頼された撮影をしたり、自分の作品を制作して大半を過ごしています。また、音楽が好きなので、夜になるとクラブやライブハウスで友人と過ごすこともあります。
好きなファッションスタイルはありますか？
特にこだわりはありませんが、装飾の無いシンプルな服装が好みです。今日は薄い色のジーンズに真っ白のTシャツに黒のスニーカー、あとベージュのキャップを被っています。
あなたのワードローブからお気に入りの1着を教えて下さい。
最近買った古着のスラックスです。太さがちょうど良く、履き心地がいいので気に入っています。
初めて写真を撮った時のことを覚えていますか？
はい、８歳くらいの頃、父親のフィルムカメラを勝手に持ち出して撮った時の事をよく覚えています。その時撮った写真は今も手元にあり、大切にしています。
写真を撮る際に心掛けていることを教えて下さい。
出来るだけ美しく嘘をつく事です。
使用しているカメラやフィルムを教えていただけますか？
カメラはCanon 5D Mark2とContax T3です。フィルムはKodak Gold200を使っています。

尊敬しているアーチストや写真家はいますか？
沢山います。写真家だとConstantin Schlachter, David Fathi, Todd Hido, Tommy Neaseを尊敬しています。写真家以外だと、映画監督のGus Van Santを尊敬しています。
作品はもとより、彼のメイキング映像やインタビューでの発言は僕にとっての聖書となっています。
現在インスピレーションを受けている映画/本/人物/事物などを教えて下さい。
最近読んだJoan Fontcubertaの「Pandora’s Camera」という本から深いインスピレーションを受けました。あと、Matmosというボルチモア拠点の電子音楽デュオが今年発表した新譜の楽曲 とミュージックビデオに感銘を受けました。
niuhansの撮影はどこで行いましたか？
実家がある、京都府の南丹市の胡麻の、慣れ親しんだ森の中で撮影しました。
撮影中のエピソードなどを教えて下さい。
撮影をしていた山に熊が出没していたというニュースを、撮影が終わってから知り驚きました。
撮影中は皆リラックスしていたので、まさか自分たちが命がけで撮影をしているとは思いもよりませんでした。
モデルをされた方との関係について教えて下さい。
Charlieは友人で、Ayakaはガールフレンドです。
今後撮影で訪れてみたい場所はありますか？
幼少期にカナダのバンクーバーにある大叔母の家でしばらく過ごしていたことが有るのですが、もう２０年以上行けていないので、もう一度行って微かな記憶を辿りながら撮影をしてみたいです。
