Depressing view of a freeway.

I’m a pretty consistent aqua blue.

I grew up in suburban California. It was just lots of strip malls and track housing. The closest major city was Sacramento, that had a really good punk music scene. It made for a pretty great upbringing really. I had the stability and calm of the suburbs that created a safe if yet predictable space to rebel against that stability. Then close by I had an outlet for that rebellion in the local music scene.

After bouncing around a little bit I have landed in San Francisco for now.

The california flower is the golden poppy. It is a small wild flower that has a great dark orange blossom.

Fall. I lived in New York for a few years and I really miss the fall there.

In many ways, San Francisco and the Bay Area is my spirtual home. That’s why after 5 years away I got called back. There has been a lot of change here over the years with the tech boom and the dought. There are a lot of things that I hate about living in San Francisco, but it will always feel like home more than anywhere else.

I love to cook for family and friends. There is something really special about taking the time and care to feed your loved ones. It is hard to beat long night’s lingering over bottles of wine.　Friends and family , can’t live without them.

I work a lot, probably too much. Much of my “days off” get consumed by doing other artistic projects and planning. Sitting in a cafe with a pad of paper ends up being a relaxing Sunday. When I can get away my wife and I like to hike in Northern California.

Simple. Jeans and a black pocket t, all black high-top converse.

I was interested in photography at a pretty young age. I thought I wanted to be a painter when I was very young, then in high school I thought maybe a writer. Photography in many ways is in between those 2 things.

I do actually. I was on a family vacation in mexico when I was about 10 or 11. A wedding procession walked by, and I was taken by the beauty of the bride in the street. I asked my mom for the little point and shoot she had and I took one photo. I don’t know if the picture ever came out, but I remember taking it.

I like to try and find something honest and nuanced. I like the quiet in between moments.

I do actually. I have no formal study of it, but I took a lot of inspiration from sculpture for the Parallelograms series.

The camera doesn’t matter that much to me. I mostly use the Canon 5D because it is the most versatile. But I have used polaroids, panoramics, 4×5 whatever makes the most sense for that particular project.

Just before I moved to San Francisco I subleased a room from a friend. I noticed that the front room had these great south facing bay windows that had wonderful light. I wanted to shoot with that light as much as I could before moving.

I think it went great. I loved it enough that I continued to shoot in the same set up for “Sundays” project.

They are both friends.

I would love to visit Japan. I feel like any thoughts or impressions I would have of Japan would inevitably be completely wrong upon visiting. It seems like a place that is very hard to define or pin down.

I would like to drive across the country and shoot in the “West” and “South.” There is a long tradition of wandering and photographing the vast American landscape from Avedon, Alec Soth, or Stephen Shore. I want to make my American journey.

I am still acclimating back to California and figuring out my next move. I really want to take off in my car and drive the country for my American project.

ニューヨーク経由のサンフランシスコです。

2時です。

気がめいるような高速道路の景色が広がっています。

常にアクアブルーです。

カリフォルニアの郊外で育ちました。ショッピングモールが沢山あって、同じ形の家が立ち並ぶ町です。近くにサクラメントというパンク音楽が有名な都市があって、私も凄く影響を受けました。育ったのはとても安全で穏やかな場所でしたが、退屈にも感じていたので、地元の音楽シーンが反逆心のはけ口になっていたのです。

方々を転々としてきましたが、今のところはサンフランシスコです。

ゴールデンポピーというカルフォルニアの花で、小さなダークオレンジ色の野花です。

秋です。以前住んでいたニューヨークで過ごす秋が特に好きです。

今またこうして再びサンフランシスコに戻ってきたのも、色んな意味でこの街と西海岸のエリアが私にとってそういった場所だからなのだと感じています。この辺りはテクノロジーの発展やその恩恵によって、近年劇的な変化を経てきた場所です。嫌な部分も沢山ありますが、こんなに安らぎを感じられる場所は他になかったです。

家族や友人のために料理することです。後片付けはちょっと大変ですが、大切な人のために時間をかけて料理を振る舞うのは、本当に素敵なことだと感じています。家族と友人は掛け替えのない存在ですから、大切にしています。

私はたぶん働き過ぎなぐらいのハードワーカーですが、休日は作品制作をしたり、日曜にカフェに座ってただのんびりと過ごすこともあります。妻とも離れて完全に独りになれるときには、カルフォルニア北部をハイキングしたりもします。

シンプルなスタイルが好きです。ジーンズに黒いポケットの付いたTシャツを着たり、コンバースのハイカットスニーカーを履くのが好きです。

子供の頃から写真には興味を持っていました。幼い頃は絵描きになりたいと思ったこともあって、高校のときは作家になりたいと思っていました。写真家への道はその２つの中間にあったのだと思います。

ええ、よく覚えています。たしか私が10歳か11歳の頃で、家族でメキシコ旅行に行ったのですが、町で花嫁行列を見かけて、母に頼んでその美しい花嫁さんと私を写真に収めてもらったのです。その後、その写真を現像したのか定かではないですが、その時私自身も1枚写真を撮ったことを覚えています。

瞬間の静寂を捉えるのが好きです。微妙なニュアンスや偽りのない姿を写したいと思っています。

ええ、あります。本格的に美術の勉強をしたわけではないですが、Parallelograms（Dan Grahamによるスカルプチャー作品）からも沢山のアイデアを得ています。

あまりカメラに拘るタイプではないですが、使い勝手がよいので通常はCanon 5Dを使っています。特定の作品制作では、ポラロイド、パノラマカメラ、4×5を使用することもあります。

サンフランシスコへ移る前に友人から借りていた家で撮影しました。その家には湾に面した南向きの居間があって、いつも素晴らしい光が射していたので、引っ越す前に出来るだけそこで撮影をしたいと考えていたところでした。

撮影は上手くいったと思いますし、私自身もとても気に入っています。「Sunday」プロジェクトとして、現在も同じセットでの撮影を続けています。

２人とも私の友人です。

実際に日本を訪れてみないと、私が現在抱いている日本への考えや印象は間違っているような気がします。いつか日本に行ってみたいですが、日本を説明したり定義するのはとても難しいように思えます。

車を走らせながら、アメリカの西部と南部の風景を撮影したいと考えているところです。Avedon、Alec Soth、Stephen Shoreなど、歴代の写真家たちも広大なアメリカの大地に憧れて、それを作品にしていますから、私もアメリカの旅で撮影をしたいと考えています。

まだカリフォルニアでの生活を始めたばかりですが、アメリカンプロジェクトのために、はやく車で旅に出たいと考えています。
