It could only be gray, because it’s raining, but maybe a pinkish-gray because I’m in a pretty good mood.

I grew up in Hoboken NJ, which is just across the river from Manhattan. Both of my parents are artists, although my brother and I were mostly raised by our mom. There was a lot of creativity and not a lot of rules.

My favorite flowers are daffodils, which are some of the first flowers of spring. I love the bright yellow against the flat colors of the end of winter.

Summer

All of Italy, but especially the Amalfi Coast.

I love putting my daughter to bed at night. I get into her tiny bed with her and read to her. Afterwards we snuggle and talk about her day. It’s such a sweet and quiet moment at the end of what are usually very hectic days.

Since I have little kids, my days off aren’t really off! We usually go to the farmer’s market and take the kids to the park, maybe see some friends. On working days I am mixed between sitting at my computer alone, running around to appointments, and shooting.

I always say my style is 1973.  My favorite piece I own is a vintage army jacket I bought at the flea market in Paris. It’s quite small and fits well. I think it’s from the Korean army. I have been wearing that jacket for years. I love it dressed up or down, maybe best with my classic black Chanel purse.

I have a photograph of myself when I was five and taking pictures on the streets on Amsterdam.I look very serious. But the first pictures I took deliberately were when I was 17.There are still pictures from that first roll that I think are good.

I’m always looking to capture the feeling of a moment.

With the right light you can photograph anything and make it look interesting.

I switched to digital about six years ago and I don’t shoot much film anymore. I love film but they had stopped making all the films I loved, so I find I actually have more choices to do what I want by shooting digital. But my last film camera I used regularly was a Leica Minilux and I loved Kodachrome film best. Now I shoot a lot on my work camera, which is a Canon 5D Mark 3, and a Fuji X-100.

The first photo book I owned was Nan Goldin’s “The Ballad of Sexual Dependency.” It was the book that changed the way I thought about photography, so I would have to mention it here. I also really love Saul Leiter “Early Color,” Sally Mann “Immediate Family,” Bruce Davidson “Subway,” and Ed van Dee Elsken “Love on the Left Bank.” And Brassai’s Paris at Night.

Oh that’s such a long list! Nan was a huge influence on me, both through her work and through my time working with her. David Armstrong was also a mentor to me and I think a truly amazing portrait photographer. He always treated his subjects with such kindness. All of the photographers listed above are favorites, along with Peter Hujar. For people working today, I really love Vivienne Sassen, Helen van Meene, Rinko Kawauchi, and Harley Weir.  There are also a lot of photographers who are less well know who I follow on Instagram and whose work I find really inspiring. Arianna Lago (@arianna.lago), Francis Kokoroko (@accraphoto), and Guy Bolongaro (@bandini3000) are just a few.

I am always the most inspired by travel and seeing new things.

I shot in the house of my childhood best friend.

It was fairly simple. I’ve taken so many pictures of Katherine over the years that we were pretty relaxed. She just put on the clothes and we shot.

Katherine and I were best friends from the time we were 14 until just a few years ago. We founded Dossier together, and between the challenges of having a business together and some personal things, we parted ways when we closed Dossier. I hope one day in the future we will reconnect.

I have a lot of Japanese friends and have worked with many Japanese clients, but I’m sorry to say I haven’t visited Japan yet! My impression from the people I know is that I would like it a lot.

I started a new project last year called “Double or Nothing “, which is a content platform. We create editorial and curated content, both for ourselves and in collaboration with various brand. In many ways it continues some of the work I was doing with Dossier, but it’s exciting to have a fresh start.  I’ve also been working on several photo projects about America which I’m starting to make into a show and later a book. And I’ve been starting to work more directing small films. I’m lucky – I love what I do and I’m always busy.

雨が降っているのでグレーしか思い浮かびませんが、結構気分が良いので、ピンク掛かったグレーかもしれません。

マンハッタンから河を渡ったところにある、ニュージャージー州のホーボーケンという町で育ちました。私と兄弟は、ほとんど母親の手で育てられたようなものですが、両親がアーチストだったので、クリエイティブで、ほとんど規則のない環境で暮らしていました。

ブルックリンです。

春先に咲くラッパ水仙が好きです。冬の終わりの単調な色合いに対抗するような、あの鮮やかな黄色が大好きです。

夏です。

イタリアの全てですが、特にアマリア海岸です。

娘を寝かしつける時間を大切にしています。彼女の小さなベッドに入って、絵本の読み聞かせをした後で横になったまま、彼女の１日について話をしたりして、忙しい毎日の終わりに感じることのできるとても穏やかで静かな一時です。

小さな子供がいるので、休日といっても休めないんです！子供たちを連れて、ファーマーズマーケットや公園へ出かけたり、友人に会ったりしています。仕事の日は、ひとりでコンピューターに向かっているか、アポイントで走り回っていたり、撮影を行っています。

いつも自分のスタイルを1973年と表現しているんです。 お気に入りの服は、おそらく、韓国軍のものだと思うけれど、パリの蚤の市で見つけたヴィンテージのミリタリージャケットで、小さな作りが私の体に上手くフィットするので長年愛用しています。そのジャケットで着くずしたり、正装したりするのが好きで、シャネルのクラシックバッグと合わせるのが一番良いと思っています。

5歳の時にアムステルダムの路上で写真を撮ったことがあって、ずいぶん真剣な顔をした自分の写った写真を持っていますが、計画的に初めて撮影したのは17歳の時で、その時の写真を今でも持っています。

瞬間を捉えることです。

撮影をするために必要な光さえあれば、何でも面白くなると思っています。

6年前、デジタルカメラへ移行してからは、フィルムで撮影する事はほとんど無くなりました。フィルムで撮影することは好きなのですが、私の好きなフィルムはもう生産され無くなってしまったことと、実際に、デジタルで撮る時の方が、選択幅が広がったからです。でも、最後に使用したアナログのカメラは、Leica Miniluxで、フィルムはKodachromeを使用するのが一番好きです。現在仕事で頻繁に使用しているカメラは、Canon 5D Mark 3とFuji X-100です。

子供の頃からの親友の家で撮影しました。

撮影はとてもシンプルなものでした。キャサリンのことは長い間撮影してきたので、お互いとてもリラックスした雰囲気でしたし、彼女が服を着ている姿をそのまま撮影しました。

キャサリンとは古い付き合いで、私たちが14歳の頃から数年前まで大の仲良しでした。一緒にDossierというマガジンを立ち上げ、公私を共にした仲だったんですが、Dossierを閉刊した際に、お互い別の道を歩むことにしました。彼女とはまたいつか、再会したいと願っています。

日本人の友達はたくさん居ます。今まで何度も日本のクライアントと仕事をしたことがあるのに、まだ日本を訪れた事が無いんです。ごめんなさい！でも、今まで出会った日本人から受ける印象から、私は日本がとても好きになるだろうと想像しています。

昨年から「Double or Nothing 」というプロジェクトを開始していて、自分たちでコンテンツの企画や編集を行っています。そこで自分たちの作品を公開したり、様々なブランドとコラボレーションを行っているんです。以前Dossierでやっていたことの続きのようなものだけど、新たなスタートは新鮮で、楽しいです。 現在アメリカに関するいくつかのフォトプロジェクトに携わっていて、いつか展示を開催した後に、それを本にして出版しようと考えています。他には、小規模な動画制作もしています。私は常に自分のしている事が好きですし、忙しくしているので、自分を幸せ者だと思っています。
