Its dark out, I can see out my apartment and into the neighbor’s window across from me, his light is always on.

Yellow. Today was very bright and sunny and nice. Its finally turning into spring.

I am from Northern California, I grew up in the suburbs outside of San Francisco. Every house looks the same. Its really hot and dry and brown and you can see the hills in the distance. I moved to San Francisco when I was 18 and lived there for 10 or 11 years. I loved being close to the coast, San Francisco might have the best climate out of anywhere I’ve been.

New York City.

I am just back from visiting my parents home a few weeks ago and everything is blooming there now. I don’t remember them being there when I was growing up but there are so many cherry blossom trees everywhere now. Its really beautiful. There isn’t a lot of color there, everything is very muted, the hills and the houses are all very dull so the cherry blossoms really pop out. I also noticed that there is wild yellow mustard flower that grows in all the areas between the roads and houses, great big patches of yellow lining the streets.

Hmm, not really. I do like the sense of having a home base though. I used to travel a lot, I would be gone for months at a time and didn’t have my own space to come back to. Now that I have an apartment I feel much more settled and at peace.

Fall.

I’m not really a morning person but I love having time before work to sit and have a cup of coffee and do nothing for a few minutes. I really love the morning ritual, I tend to eat the same thing everyday and go to the same coffee shop. I actually look forward to it at night.

Lately I have been having a lot of fun spending my days off in the dark room printing photos. I wish I had more time/money so I could print every weekend. During the work day/week I am in an office, sitting at a computer. I am really motivated to always be working on a project so even on days off I like to work on something creative. I’m not very good at unplugging and just relaxing.

I don’t think too much about fashion and trends, I think that is why I really like uniforms. Military and industrial work clothing. Not Heritage work wear but uniforms that you would wear if you worked in a factory or something that was government issued. I have a green lab coat that I like wearing because it has a lot of pockets. I wish I could just wear the same thing every day.

I wish that I did remember the first photo I took. I know what it was in high school and I was probably 15 or 16 years old. It was a black and white photo class.

I try to capture honesty. I think the camera lies a lot so I think its something that you need to be aware of, its a fun aspect of the camera to work with and exploit.

I am always attacked to geometric shapes and high contrast, I look for shadows a lot. I wish I could photograph more people but I’m not very good at it. I tend to be attracted to subjects that don’t move too much so I can study the light and figure out the best time to take the photo.

I have had the same camera for 15 years, its a cannon AE-1. I got it from my parents when I took a photo class in high school and I never gave it back. Its still my favorite camera to shoot with. I recently started shooting with a Pentax 67 on a tripod in the studio and I really excited about that. The short frame count is helping me think more ahead of time so I know what I am doing when I get into the studio. I mostly shoot Kodak Portra and T-Max .

I was back in San Francisco a few months ago and I went to my old college library. I sat down and grabbed the first book that was in front of me and it was “Light Years” by Ralph Gibson. Its such a beautiful book. Its everything that I love about black and white photography.

I am always attracted to photos of people. I love looking at portraiture. I respect photographers that can capture an honest portrait of another human being.

My friends are very inspiring, I am lucky to be around some very smart and creative people. I feel like living in NYC is also very motivating and inspiring.

I shot it in Australia while on holiday. I shot the photos between Sydney and Brisbane.

I was lucky to be there for a full month so the shoot was really slow and relaxed. We would just drive up and down and coast and try to find good spots to shoot. It was a really ideal situation.

The model is my wife, Amy. We were in Australia visiting her family.

I really love Japan.. I’m Japanese and it seems vaguely familiar to me. It reminds me of my childhood, spending time with my grandparents. I have been a few times but never got to explore with a camera.

Going back to Japan is the top of my list at the moment.

I self published my first photo book not too long ago. I had a launch show in London last year and I am hoping to have one in New York and San Francisco later this summer. You can see the book here:

自宅に居ます。

夜の9:48です。

外は真っ暗で、向いの家の窓が見えます。向いの家はいつも明かりが点いているんです。

黄色です。今日は晴れ渡った気持ちの良い一日だったので、遂に春が来たという感じです。

カルフォルニア州北部のサンフランシスコ郊外で育ちました。街ではどの家も同じような形をしていて、遠くには丘が見えて、とても暑くて乾燥した気候で、全てが茶色っぽく見えるんです。18歳の時に引っ越してから、10年か11年間くらいそこで過ごしました。海岸の近くで暮らすのはとても好きです。サンフランシスコは、私が今まで訪れた場所の中で、最も理想的な気候かもしれません。

ニューヨークです。

ちょうど帰省から戻ったところで、地元は沢山の花が開花のシーズンを迎えていました。子供の頃には無かったと思うけれど、今では至る所に桜の木があって、とても美しいです。 全てがとても控えめで、色鮮やかな街ではないでけれど、丘や家がとても退屈なので、逆に桜が映えて見えます。それに、大きな花びらを付けた黄色い花が道端に沢山咲いていました。

うーん、全く無いですね。住居を定めること自体に抵抗があって、現在は穏やかに定住していますが、以前はよく戻る場所も無いまま何ヶ月も旅に出ていました。

秋です。

朝型ではないですが、仕事の前にコーヒーを飲んで、何もせず過ごす一時を大切にしています。毎朝同じものを食べて、同じコーヒーショップへ向かう、そんな朝の儀式が好きなんです。

最近は暗室で過ごすことを楽しんでいます。もっと時間とお金に余裕があったら、毎週末でも現像したいですね。平日はパソコンを使ったデスクワークをしていますが、いつも自分の作品を作っていて、休日は制作に打ち込んでいます。スイッチをオフにして、ただリラックスすることが苦手なんです。

ファッションやトレンドをあまり気にしないせいか、ミリタリーや作業着といったユニフォームに惹かれます。ヘリテージ(Heritage Research: UKのファッションブランド)の方ではなくて、工場で働く人が着る服や、政府が作る服のことです。実験用の緑のコートを持っているのですが、たくさんのポケットが付いているので愛用しています。毎日同じ服を着ることができたら良いのにとさえ思います。

初めて撮った写真を思い出せればいいんですが‥たぶん15か16歳の高校の時で、モノクロ写真だったことは覚えています。

正直さを捉えようとしています。先ずカメラは嘘をつくという事を知らなければならないと思いますし、それがカメラの優れた面であり、面白い部分でもあると思うのです。

幾何学的な形やコントラストの強いものにいつも惹かれて、影を探しています。もっと人物を撮れたらいいのですが、私にはあまり向いてないようです。光を調整して、ちょうど良い瞬間を捉えられるので、あまり動かずに写真を撮ろうとする傾向があるんです。

15年間同じCannon AE-1を使っています。高校生の時、写真の授業で両親から借りたまま 今でも愛用しています。最近はスタジオで、三脚を使ってPentax 67で撮影しているんです が、とても制作意欲をかき立てられます。シャッター回数が少ないと、より時間を意識するようになるので、スタジオに入る時に何をしたらいいのか分かるので良いです。フィルムは、Kodak PortraかT-Maxを使います。

サンフランシスコに数ヶ月前に戻った時に、私の出身大学の図書館へ行ったんですが、初めに手に取ったのがRalph Gibsonの「Light Years」でした。白黒写真のとても美しい本だと思いました。

いつも人物写真に惹かれます。ポートレイトを見るのが凄く好きで、偽りのない肖像写真を撮ることのできる写真家たちを尊敬しています。

友人にインスパイアされます。知的でクリエイティブな友人に囲まれて、ラッキーだと感じますし、活力とインスピレーショに満ちたニューヨークで暮らすのが好きです。

休暇で訪れたオーストラリアのシドニーとブリズベンで撮影しました。

ラッキーな事に丸一ヶ月を現地で過ごすことができて、ゆっくりリラックスした雰囲気で撮影することができました。海岸を車で行ったり来たりしながら撮影場所を探して、とても理想的な状況でした。

モデルは私の妻、エイミーです。彼女の家族に会いに、オーストラリアを訪れていたんです。

日本はとても好きです。私は日本人なので、何となく親しみを感じますし、子供の頃に祖父母と過ごした思い出があって、何度か日本を訪れていますが、写真を撮った事は未だないんです。

日本で撮影したいです。

少し前に、自費出版で初めて本を発表しました。昨年ロンドンでは、発売記念の展示をしましたが、この夏は、ニューヨークとサンフランシスコでも同じように展示をしたいと考えているところです。
